Canonical has unveiled Ubuntu 23.04 Lunar Lobster, introducing the new desktop installer Subiquity, improved Azure Active Directory (AAD) support, and boosted gaming performance. The release follows in the footsteps of Fedora Linux 38, incorporating GNOME 44 for an enhanced desktop experience with multiple new features and improvements.
In terms of gaming, Ubuntu 23.04’s Steam snap package has been upgraded to the stable version, allowing for faster Steam updates and gaming without the need for additional PPAs. The latest release also includes 32-bit libraries, up-to-date Mesa drivers, and stability-enhancing updates that enhance gaming performance.
When it comes to AAD, Ubuntu 23.04 supports authentication within AAD, making it the only Linux distribution to natively support user authentication using AAD. Enterprise administrators can now authenticate Ubuntu desktops using the same Microsoft 365 or Azure credentials. Canonical encourages IT administrators to test the aad-auth feature, which will be ported to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS later this year.
