Apple Rolls Out Advanced Battery Health Features for New iPads
After the controversy surrounding iPhone battery performance, Apple made significant strides in offering iPhone users advanced battery health monitoring features. These include tracking the current battery capacity, peak performance capabilities, and even providing battery manufacture details on newer iPhone models. However, iPad users have been left waiting for similar advancements—until now.
The recent launch of the iPad Pro with the Apple M4 chip and the iPad Air with the Apple M2 chip marks a pivotal update. Apple has introduced comprehensive battery health management features for these devices, addressing a long-standing gap in iPad user experience.
Key enhancements include optimized battery charging, which pauses charging at 80% to extend battery lifespan, displaying remaining battery capacity, logging battery cycle counts, and revealing the battery's manufacture date. These features empower iPad users to monitor their battery health directly without relying on third-party apps, with the optimized charging feature particularly aimed at prolonging battery life.
However, it's worth noting that these updates are not yet available for older iPad models. Drawing parallels with Apple's approach to iPhones, even if it's technically feasible to roll out these battery health features to older iPads via an iPadOS update, Apple may opt not to. This mirrors the situation with the iPhone 15 series, where only users of these models have access to comprehensive battery manufacture and cycle information.
