Netflix to End Support for Older Apple TVs: Time to Upgrade!
If you're used to watching Netflix on your Apple TV, you might need to reconsider your Apple TV model. Netflix has decided to phase out support for the second and third generations of Apple TV.
To be fair, phasing out these Apple TVs isn't a major issue since the second generation was released in 2010 and the third in 2012. These devices are quite old, and Apple has already classified them as discontinued products, no longer providing software updates or hardware services.
According to a Netflix support announcement, the Netflix app for tvOS will no longer support these old Apple TVs after July 31, 2024. If you want to continue watching Netflix on your TV, you'll need to purchase a newer Apple TV model.
Netflix will primarily support the Apple TV HD (released in 2015) and later versions, so you'll need at least an Apple TV HD to continue enjoying Netflix.
Here is the list of supported devices:
- Apple TV HD (4th generation)
- Apple TV 4K (1st generation)
- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
- Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)
All Apple TV 4K models support streaming Netflix content in 4K resolution and also support 5.1 surround sound, alternative audio tracks, and HDR formats such as HDR10 and Dolby Vision (depending on your TV's capabilities).
The Apple TV HD can stream Netflix content at up to 1080p resolution. However, if you're buying a new device now, it's recommended to choose an Apple TV 4K, as the Apple TV HD is likely only available on the second-hand market.
