Canonical, the developer of the open-source operating system, has officially unveiled Ubuntu 24.10, codenamed "Oracular Oriole." This version, not being an LTS (Long-Term Support) release, comes with a shorter support period.
For non-LTS releases like Ubuntu 24.10, security support extends until July 2025. Desktop users, who prioritize new features over support duration, will find this update particularly appealing, especially with the option for rolling upgrades to future versions.
This release's headline feature is the inclusion of the Linux Kernel 6.11 and the GNOME 47 desktop environment. GNOME 47 brings numerous new features and improvements that promise to enhance the user experience significantly.
Shift in Kernel Selection Strategy:
Though not an LTS version, Ubuntu 24.10 marks a significant shift for Canonical in selecting the latest upstream kernel for its distribution. This change ensures users and hardware manufacturers benefit from the latest features and hardware support with each new release, facilitating easier planning for future Ubuntu kernel versions and LTS hardware support updates by OEMs.
