Undersea Cable Disruption of American Multinational Internet Service Provider Cogent Leads to Increased Delays in Asia Connection
Today, American multinational Internet service provider, Cogent, announced a disruption in its undersea cable operations. The supplier of Cogent's undersea cables, particularly those located off the West Coast of the United States, including Los Angeles, has experienced several outages. The supplier is currently investigating the cause of these disruptions.
Due to the complex nature of undersea cable repairs, Cogent has not provided a timeline for when services will be restored. In the meantime, network connections are being rerouted. While this does not result in a complete network failure, it does affect speed and latency.
Cogent and its suppliers are coordinating and/or dispatching several undersea cable maintenance vessels to repair the disrupted cables. An update will be provided when more information on restoration timelines is available.
The network services provided by the company primarily connect the West Coast of the United States (California) with Europe, and some connections from the West Coast to Asia are rerouted through Europe. The outage could impact these routes.
Data centers/VPS providers affected by this incident are expected to release notifications successively. Until the cables are fully repaired and routing is restored, it may be difficult to address the issues of increased delays and slower speeds.
