Breaking Tradition: Apple May Embrace Touchscreen for MacBook Pro by 2025
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, known for releasing various insider news about Apple, has leaked that Apple is actively developing a MacBook with a touchscreen. The company aims to launch a MacBook Pro with touchscreen capabilities by 2025.
The touchscreen MacBook Pro will look identical to the standard version, complete with a touchpad and keyboard. The difference lies in the touchscreen's support for touch and gesture operations, similar to how one interacts with an iPad.
In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple's Vice President of Marketing for the iPad and Mac products, Tom Boger, also discussed the touchscreen MacBook. He stated that Macs and iPads complement rather than compete with each other. iPads serve primarily as touch devices, while Macs are designed for indirect operations, namely through a keyboard, mouse, and/or touchpad.
Despite The Wall Street Journal reporter Joanna Stern's repeated attempts to get a definitive answer, Tom Boger maintained:
iPads have touchscreens, Macs do not. macOS represents a very different computing paradigm. Many users own both an iPad and a Mac, viewing the iPad as an extension of their Mac work. With continuity features, users can easily work across devices.
So, will there really be no touchscreen Mac devices? Will Apple change its stance on touchscreen Macs? Tom Boger: Oh, I can't say we'll never change our mind.
Considering the high credibility of Mark Gurman's previous leaks, it's hard to say Apple has no plans to develop a touchscreen MacBook Pro. For now, it might be that Apple is keeping its plans under wraps for confidentiality reasons, or it could be that Apple is indeed developing it but the specific release plans may change depending on the progress of the development.
