X/Twitter Now Defaults to Sharing Your Data with AI for Training, Here's How to disable it
X/Twitter has now enabled by default a data-sharing feature that shares user data with Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, for the purpose of AI training.
xAI's main product is the AI conversational bot Grok, which is currently available for X Premium subscription users. However, regardless of whether a subscription is active, data will be shared with xAI for the training of Grok.
In the statement, X indicates that to continuously improve the experience, it will use posts and user interactions, inputs, and outcomes with Grok for training and fine-tuning. This means that for these purposes, users' interactions, inputs, and outcomes may also be shared with the xAI service provider.
Currently, this feature can only be disabled on the web version. It is recommended that users turn off the sharing option to prevent their posts and conversations with Grok from being used by xAI or shared with third parties.
Here's how to disable it:
- Open X/Twitter in a web browser.
- Click on "More", then "Settings and Privacy", followed by "Privacy and Safety".
- Go to "Data Sharing and Personalization" > "Grok".
- Uncheck the data sharing option.
If you feel this is not enough, you can also click to delete the conversation history. This will remove your conversation history with Grok, but it's unclear if the conversations that have already taken place have been used for training or shared with third parties.
This functionality is not yet supported on the X for iOS/Android apps, and it's unknown if future versions will include an option to make it easier for users to cancel the data sharing feature.
