Apple has announced collaborations with multiple airlines to share luggage tracking tag locations for quick baggage recovery.
In the iOS 18.2 beta, Apple made significant upgrades to its Find My network. A notable new feature allows users to create temporary links for tracking tags like AirTag. These links can be shared with others to track the location of items.
For instance, you could share a tracking link with airline staff. This way, if your luggage is lost or delayed, the airline staff can use the location information to help recover your baggage more swiftly.
Today, Apple released a press release announcing this news. Apple has partnered with more than 15 airlines, enabling users to quickly share tracking links with them. Once shared, airline staff can directly receive the link and check the location.
Features of the shared location tracking links include:
- Automatic Expiration: The generated item tracking tag location link will automatically expire and become inaccessible after one week.
- Accessible to Anyone: Anyone who receives the link can view the item's real-time location.
- Browser Tracking Support: The item tracking tag location link doesn't require an iPhone to load; it can be opened on any device and browser.
- Manual Link Termination: You can manually terminate the sharing link once the item is found, and you can check how many times the link has been used during its active period.
It's important to note that the AirTag mentioned at the beginning of this article is just an example. Any tracking tag that connects to the Find My network offers this feature, so third-party tracking tags you purchase will also work.
Furthermore, the number of airlines partnering with Apple is expected to continue growing. The current partners include:
- Aer Lingus
- Air Canada
- Air New Zealand
- Austrian Airlines
- British Airways
- Brussels Airlines
- Delta Air Lines
- Eurowings
- Iberia
- KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
- Lufthansa
