Due to High Demand for Video Generation, OpenAI Temporarily Halts Release of Sora Model API
Sora, a video generation model launched by OpenAI, has gained immense popularity among ChatGPT subscription users for its ability to produce highly realistic videos. However, video generation requires significant computational resources.
To date, ChatGPT subscribers have created millions of videos using the Sora model, highlighting the enormous demand for this model. This demand has led OpenAI to temporarily reserve its resources, making it impossible for everyone to use Sora.
Typically, OpenAI gradually makes new models available to free users after a certain period. However, not only is the Sora model currently unavailable to free users, but OpenAI has also decided against releasing an API for the time being.
An API would allow developers to quickly generate videos by calling the model through the platform. Without an API, users have limited options to access Sora, essentially restricted to subscribing to ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro.
Nonetheless, OpenAI is actively working on solutions. The company has promised that making video generation with Sora accessible to everyone will take some time, but they are seeking ways to expedite this process.
On another note, Google recently provided limited API access for its video model Veo, with the API for Veo 2 expected to launch sometime in 2025. The generative capabilities of Veo 2 are also impressively stunning.
Therefore, as different companies' video generation models achieve similar levels of effectiveness, the race is on to see who can first release an API. With an API, developers and a myriad of applications could easily integrate AI-powered video generation features.
