Microsoft Tests Windows 11 Passkey API Update to Support Third-Party Password Manager System Unlock
Microsoft has previously announced the introduction of Passkey support in Windows 11, and recently, it has been testing the integration of Windows 11 with third-party password managers regarding Passkey.
The latest WebAuthn API update, aimed at developers, has added support for third-party Passkey providers for passwordless authentication on Windows 11.
These third-party Passkey providers include not only common password managers but also some developers specializing in Passkey technology for enterprise authentication.
After integrating the latest version of the WebAuthn API, developers can use password managers and other tools to create Passkeys, which can then be used to unlock Windows 11 authentication.
This update effectively adds an additional method for Windows 11 authentication, as previously, Windows Hello primarily supported Microsoft's own verification services without support for third-party solution providers.
All such solution providers can now access the new API and test it in the Windows Insider beta version. Microsoft stated:
In the coming months, Windows clients will be able to choose third-party providers as an additional option besides the native Windows key provider, while continuing to enjoy the Windows Hello user experience.
Messages in the WebAuthn flow will be forwarded to the plugin, and the response from the plugin will reach the WebAuthn client application, allowing the plugin to create and use Passkeys for authentication upon user request.
The version currently supporting this new experience is Windows 11 Beta Build 22635.4515/ KB5046756, and relevant developers can install it for testing.
