7-Zip Version 24.05 Unveiled: Setting New Standards in Compression Compatibility
The renowned open-source compression tool, 7-Zip, has recently rolled out its latest version, 24.05, marking a significant update with the introduction of version compatibility settings for compressed files. This feature allows users to set the minimum compatible version for archives.
For those utilizing the command line, a new command, `-myv={MMNN}`, has been introduced. This command is used to specify the decompression algorithm compatibility version for 7z format archives, where MMNN represents the version number of 7-Zip, such as 2405 for version 24.05.
This functionality primarily sets the lowest compatible version for the archive. For instance, if an archive is created with a minimum requirement for decompression using version 2405, users with older versions of 7-Zip will not be able to utilize the new decoding methods.
It's important to note that from version 24.05 onwards, the minimum compatibility version for 7-Zip is set to version 23.00. If users operate via the command line without specifying an MMNN, the default will be set to 2300.
However, this change will not affect the distribution and usage of 7z format compressed files, as older versions of 7-Zip can still decompress files using traditional methods, albeit potentially with lower efficiency.
Additionally, the update introduces `-myfa={FilterID}` and `-myfd={FilterID}` commands, allowing users to enable or disable specific filtering methods when creating 7z format archives, respectively.
Users of 7-Zip are encouraged to download the latest version to upgrade:
