Passkey Support Comes to iOS with Bitwarden: Enhancing Login Security
The popular password manager Bitwarden has unlocked the power of Passkeys for iOS users, offering a seamless and secure login experience. With the latest update, Bitwarden for iOS (version 2024.4.2, released on May 4, 2024) now supports Passkey creation and authentication, revolutionizing the way users register and log into their favorite apps.
Passkeys, also known as cryptographic keys, are stored locally on the device and offer a stronger alternative to traditional passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA) codes. The beauty of Passkeys lies in their uniqueness; each website or app has its own distinct Passkey, eliminating the risk of password reuse and potential breaches due to data leaks.
While using Bitwarden on iOS,users can now create and employ Passkeys for a streamlined login process. An additional layer of security is added as access to Passkeys requires verification through TouchID, FaceID, or a password, ensuring that even if your device is temporarily unlocked by someone else, your Passkeys remain secure.
It's important to note that Passkey functionality is dependent on website or app support. Only sites that have implemented Passkey compatibility will allow users to take advantage of this feature. The term "Passkey" may also be referred to as "cryptographic key," "biometric key," or simply "key" on certain websites.
Here's a brief overview of Passkeys:
Passkeys are cryptographic keys that are generated and stored locally on the device.
Users cannot download, view, or modify the Passkey content, ensuring a higher level of security.
Passkeys are unique for each website or app, eliminating password reuse and providing robust protection against data breach-related threats.
