Nintendo Joins Sony and Microsoft in Abandoning X/Twitter for Game Shares
After being abandoned by Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo has now announced that it will also abandon the X/Twitter platform. Starting June 10, 2024, the Nintendo Switch gaming console will no longer support sharing screenshots or recorded game videos to the X/Twitter platform.
However, Nintendo is only removing the integration of the X platform from its system. Users can still save images or videos locally and then manually share them on the X platform. It’s more cumbersome but still possible.
Nintendo announces that starting June 10, sharing Switch screenshots or videos to X/Twitter will no longer be supported.
Why have game developers collectively abandoned the X platform?
The reason is simple. Elon Musk adjusted the X/Twitter API interface, and now companies with a high volume of calls usually need to pay an annual fee of $40,000 to get interface permissions.
Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo are not short of the $40,000 annual fee. They just disapprove of Elon Musk's approach and therefore are unwilling to pay the fee.
Typically, for social media platforms, the more users and content sent, the better. Thus, allowing gamers to easily share content on social networks is beneficial for the platform.
However, since Elon Musk did not provide an exemption API interface for Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo, these game developers have opted out. After all, removing the X integration has a minimal impact on players.
In response, xGaming released a statement:
The account is the official account for X gaming. X claims that the gaming community is one of the largest and most active on the platform, and X is committed to enhancing and supporting game-related features.
Considering Nintendo's plan to stop sharing content from the Switch to X, from June 11 onwards, users will need to download screenshots or videos to their phones or computers and then publish them on the X platform.
Additionally, X emphasized that their partnership with Nintendo remains strong and will continue to work with partners to bring a better experience to the gaming community.
