New iPad Pro Suffers from HDR Display Issues, May Be Overly Bright; Apple Promises Software Fix
According to a report by iMore, Apple's latest iPad Pro is experiencing certain HDR display issues. The iPad Pro, which features an OLED display, tends to display blue colors with excessively high brightness, making them appear almost white in certain situations.
Testing revealed that this defect can manifest as a compressed pseudo-image, although iMore notes that only certain blue hues, such as navy blue and indigo, are affected by the issue.
Interestingly, the same test images did not reproduce the problem on other devices with OLED screens, including the iPhone 15 Pro, Samsung TVs, SteamDeck, and M2 iPad Pro. This suggests that the issue is unique to the new iPad Pro.
Another test case involved installing Netflix on the new iPad Pro and watching the 5th episode of Stranger Things Season 3 at the 25-minute mark (with Dolby Vision enabled). The result showed extremely noticeable overexposure on the characters' clothing.
The cause of this issue is still unclear, but iMore speculates that the new iPad Pro's image processing engine may be failing to correctly recognize the brightness of blue content, leading to overexposure and distinct separation from surrounding blue hues.
After contacting Apple about the issue, the company responded that they are aware of the problem and will address it through a future iPadOS software update.
