OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Edu for Education, Free to Use and Allows Custom Data Training
OpenAI is launching a completely free ChatGPT Edu version for universities and educational institutions in markets such as the United States. Not only is this version free to use, but universities and educational institutions can also use internal data for GPT training in order to provide students with specialized data sets and models.
ChatGPT Edu offers the GPT-4o model to students, scholars, and educational staff. This is the latest model released by OpenAI, supporting text conversation, voice input/output, visual models, and image generation among other features.
OpenAI states that the GPT-4o model performs better in interpreting text content, programming development, mathematics, analyzing data, and web browsing compared to previous versions. This enhancement will aid students and scholars in learning and teaching with the help of AI technology.
Significantly, ChatGPT Edu is positioned between the standard and enterprise versions. Unlike the standard versions, which include ChatGPT Free and ChatGPT Plus, the education version offers the functionality of custom data training. This means universities and educational institutions can organize their internal data for GPT training, then provide a dataset focused on the institution to students.
Additionally, the education version inherits some features of the enterprise and team versions, such as ensuring that all students' conversations and data will not be used for training the GPT models. Thus, universities and educational institutions can deploy the ChatGPT Edu version with confidence.
Of course, the most important feature is that ChatGPT Edu is free. It not only offers free access but also has a higher quota limit than the ChatGPT free version. In the free version, there’s a limit to the number of times users can interact with GPT-4o, requiring users to wait for a period to restore their quota. ChatGPT Edu has limits as well but they are significantly higher than those of the free version, likely satisfying the needs of students and educational staff.
OpenAI plans to gradually expand ChatGPT Edu to more markets, enabling more higher education institutions to deploy ChatGPT Edu to enhance teaching capabilities and stimulate students' interest in learning.
Here are the main features of the ChatGPT Edu version:
- Free access to the GPT-4o model
- Advanced features including data analysis, web browsing, and document summarization
- Ability to build and share custom versions of GPT and ChatGPT within the school
- Much higher message limit compared to the ChatGPT free version
- Improved language quality and speed, supporting over 50 languages
- Enhanced security, data privacy, and management controls, including group permissions, SSO, SCIM, and GPT management
- Conversations and data will not be used to train OpenAI models
