Omnivore: The End of an Era for the Popular Read-Later App Post Acquisition
The popular read-later app Omnivore, used by over 500,000 users, has recently announced its acquisition by ElevenLabs. This app, known for its read-later and AI-powered speech synthesis capabilities, leverages AI to offer content narration in multiple languages.
ElevenLabs, which also operates a similar software named ElevenReader, integrated AI speech technology into its platform in June. This acquisition is expected to harness the technological expertise of the Omnivore team to enhance the user experience of ElevenReader.
Regrettably, Omnivore will cease operations and delete all user data on November 15, 2024. Users interested in preserving their data must download and export it as soon as possible.
It's noteworthy that ElevenLabs has not disclosed the service discontinuation of Omnivore on their blog, whereas Omnivore has issued a service termination notice on its blog and in emails. This might suggest that ElevenLabs is aware that the discontinuation could provoke negative sentiments and has thus chosen not to reveal it on their own blog.
Additionally, ElevenLabs has expressed its commitment to serving the developer community, stating that the Omnivore codebase will remain 100% open source. This move ensures that the broader tech community can continue to build upon and improve the technology behind Omnivore.
