X/Twitter Adds Two New Features: Sort Comments by Time and Turn off automatic video playback
Recently, the social media platform X/Twitter is adjusting its strategy based on user feedback, including the order of comments in the comment section and the issue of video auto-play, both of which have been long-standing user complaints.
Regarding the comment section issue, X had adjusted the comment display strategy a while ago. If you have an X Premium subscription, your comments are sorted to appear more prominently, making them more visible and likable by other users. In contrast, comments from non-subscribers, even if newly posted, tend to appear further down.
This sorting method has a clear directive nature; comments from X Premium users appear more prominently and can receive more likes. The higher the number of likes, the higher the comment is sorted in the algorithm.
After this adjustment by X, the default display remains "Most Relevant," which is the current recommendation strategy. However, users can manually change the sorting to "Most Recent" or "Most Liked," where "Most Recent" sorts comments by their posting time, and "Most Liked" sorts them by the number of likes.
The second modification addresses the issue of video auto-play. Previously, X's videos would stop after playing and show a replay button. In recent changes, after one video ends, the next video automatically plays, a move clearly aligning more with short video app practices, which has caused dissatisfaction among users.
Every time a user finishes watching a video, the next video automatically plays, requiring the user to manually close the player window. Now, X has added the video playback option "Auto-Advance," which users can turn off to stop videos from playing continuously.
Users of X can update to the latest version of X for iOS/Android to adjust their video playback settings. The comment section sorting is supported on both web and iOS/Android versions.
