X/Twitter Advances Towards Becoming a Super App: Developing Online Multi-Participant Video Conferencing Feature
X/Twitter has already incorporated end-to-end encrypted direct messages and voice calls based on these messages, along with a public voice feature similar to ClubHouse. Now, Elon Musk is adding an online multi-participant video conferencing feature to the mix.
According to a post by X engineer Chris Park, a new tool named X Conference is currently being tested internally. The screenshots suggest it's an online multi-participant meeting feature, akin to what apps like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Hangouts offer for video conferencing.
While this might seem superfluous for X, since it already offers multi-participant voice features, adding video conferencing capabilities doesn’t seem too far afield. After all, crossing boundaries is nothing new for X.
Recently, Elon Musk and former U.S. President Donald Trump used X's public multi-person voice feature for a live talk. Both being public figures, they would likely have utilized the X Conference feature for their discussion if it had been available.
Furthermore, X Conference will support spatial audio technology to enhance the auditory and visual experience of participants. If participants speak English, it can also automatically generate subtitles, aiding other users in following the conversation through text.
Based on how X’s previous new features work, it’s likely that X Conference will also support optional live video streaming by the host or user. For example, one person can choose to stream audio or video, while other hosts or participants can keep listening and not turn on their cameras.
