Microsoft Announces the Rollout of Windows 11 24H2 Update to All Eligible Devices
According to Microsoft's support documents, the Windows 11 24H2 update has now entered a new phase of availability. As of today, devices running the original version of Windows 11 (21H2), as well as versions 22H2 and 23H2 that meet the hardware requirements, will start receiving the update.
Typically, Microsoft stages the rollout of new updates, initially pushing them to newer devices based on a machine learning model to collect feedback logs. If no issues arise, the rollout is gradually expanded.
The server's machine learning system also coordinates the update across different hardware combinations. If a particular combination encounters compatibility issues, the rollout to those devices is paused to minimize disruption to users.
The Windows 11 24H2 update, released in early October 2024, appears to have reached a stable state over the past two months, prompting Microsoft to commence the full rollout.
While Microsoft's announcement specifically mentions Windows 11 versions, devices running Windows 10 will also receive the update notification. However, if the hardware doesn't meet Windows 11 requirements, users will see an additional prompt rather than the update automatically downloading and installing.
For PCs running Windows 11 versions 21H2, 22H2, and 23H2 that meet the hardware criteria, the system will automatically download and install the update. Users will be notified to restart their device to complete the upgrade.
In the settings menu, users have the option to pause updates.
If you're not ready to upgrade, navigate to Windows 11 settings, select Windows Update, and then pause updates. You can pause updates for up to five weeks and can choose to pause again once this period ends if you decide you're not ready to upgrade (note: pausing updates also pauses the installation of regular monthly cumulative updates).
A word of caution for gamers: consider delaying the update to avoid potential compatibility issues that could affect game performance or lead to decreased performance. After all, stability and performance are paramount for gamers.
