Microsoft's Latest Windows 11 23H2/24H2 Updates Cause Loop Restarts and Blue/Green Screen Crashes
Microsoft's routine towards the end of each month includes releasing optional, non-security preview updates (C updates), designed for testing purposes. Typically, these updates are installed only when users manually check for updates. Given their experimental nature, issues can arise, such as the problems introduced by the recent KB5043145 update, which has led to severe crashes, including blue screen (BSOD) and green screen errors for some users.
The KB5043145 update applies to both the official release of Windows 11 23H2 and the test release of Windows 11 24H2. Official releases encountering critical issues result in a blue screen crash, whereas test releases show a green screen as an indicator.
Microsoft's Statement:
In the latest support document, Microsoft acknowledges: "We have received reports from some customers that their devices are rebooting multiple times or becoming unresponsive, leading to a blue or green screen crash after attempting to install the September 2024 non-security preview update KB5043145.
It's reported that some devices, after several restarts, automatically launch a repair tool. This tool aims to diagnose and fix issues preventing the device from starting correctly. In some instances, it may also trigger a Microsoft Bitlocker recovery process.
Microsoft is currently investigating the issue and promises updates as more information becomes available.
Affected Platforms: Windows 11, versions 23H2 and 24H2."
Fortunately, since these updates are preview versions rather than official releases, they are not automatically pushed to all users, avoiding a broader impact. This precaution is especially relevant given recent incidents in June and July, where updates caused systems to restart repeatedly or boot directly into the Microsoft Bitlocker recovery screen. Now, it seems both issues have merged into one.
Advice to Users:
It's recommended to avoid manually checking for updates or enabling the option to "receive updates as soon as they are available." Doing so may automatically download and install these experimental preview updates, potentially leading to system instability.
