OpenAI to Unveil Cutting-Edge AI Model "Orion" in December 2024 as a Successor to GPT-4
The technology news outlet The Verge has reported that the artificial intelligence company OpenAI is gearing up to release a new cutting-edge AI model named OpenAI Orion in December 2024. Internally regarded as the successor to GPT-4, it remains uncertain whether this model will be officially branded as GPT-5. Despite rampant speculation and rumors surrounding GPT-5, most of these have been debunked as inaccurate.
Orion: Beyond ChatGPT Plus
Notably, even subscribers of ChatGPT Plus may not gain immediate access to the OpenAI Orion model. OpenAI plans to initially grant access to enterprises closely collaborating with them, allowing these corporate clients to develop their own products and specific functionalities using Orion.
Microsoft's Pioneering Role
Microsoft, known for its close partnership with OpenAI, is reported to be among the first to deploy the Orion model on Microsoft Azure as early as November, before offering API access to other collaborating enterprises in stages.
Orion's Capabilities
Details about Orion or GPT-5 remain scarce, but OpenAI executives have previously hinted that Orion’s capabilities could be up to 100 times more powerful than those of GPT-4. Unlike the reasoning model o1 released in September, Orion aims to evolve in conjunction with large language models (LLMs) over time, potentially culminating in a model that could achieve the status of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).
Anticipation Builds
The anticipation for Orion's launch is also linked to a post by Sam Altman on X (formerly Twitter), where he expressed excitement about the forthcoming rise of the "winter constellation," clearly alluding to the Orion model set for a December release.
Innovative Training Approach
Furthermore, OpenAI is reportedly using a project codenamed Strawberry (o1) to generate synthetic data for training Orion. This implies that Orion’s training dataset might not solely rely on data collected from the internet but will also include data synthesized by AI, showcasing a novel approach to AI training methodologies.
This strategic move by OpenAI not only paves the way for advancements in AI technology but also highlights the evolving landscape of AI development, where collaboration, innovation, and synthetic data play crucial roles.
