Due to extremely low market demand, LG has ceased production of all Blu-ray players, with sales to stop once existing inventory is sold out.
Several companies have already exited the Blu-ray player market, and now, LG, a leading manufacturer of Blu-ray players from South Korea, has stopped production of all versions of Blu-ray players. Sales will cease once the current stock is depleted.
This is not an official announcement from LG, but multiple sources have corroborated the news. Interestingly, in response to market rumors, LG issued an official statement: LG will not completely exit the Blu-ray player market and may resume production if future demand increases.
The reason for the cessation is quite simple: Blu-ray players are rarely, if ever, used anymore. Currently, those who buy Blu-ray players are usually professional users, a market that is far too small.
LG's LG UBK80 and UBK90 UHD Blu-ray players are still on sale. UHD Blu-ray is a format different from standard Blu-ray, offering a maximum resolution of 4K, or 3840×2160 pixels, compared to the 1920×1080 pixel resolution of standard Blu-ray.
These two LG UHD Blu-ray players were released in 2018, the same year when OPPO, originally known for its players, announced its exit from the market. In 2019, Samsung also declared its departure, leaving Blu-ray enthusiasts with only a few options like LG.
Blu-ray players and discs will not disappear overnight, but as time progresses and user numbers dwindle, they may become expensive devices purchased only by professional enthusiasts.
