Ubuntu 24.10, Codenamed Oracular Oriole, Takes Flight on October 10
For those who prefer the latest features over long-term support, Ubuntu 24.10, codenamed Oracular Oriole, is set to take flight on October 10, 2024. As a non-LTS (Long-Term Support) release, Ubuntu 24.10 will only be supported for nine months, but that's plenty of time for desktop users to enjoy the updates it brings and then upgrade to the next release when the time comes.
Here are the key dates for Ubuntu 24.10's journey:
- August 15, 2024: Feature Freeze
- September 5, 2024: User Interface Freeze
- September 19, 2024: Release of the Beta Version
- September 26, 2024: Kernel Freeze
- October 3, 2024: Final Freeze and Release Candidate
- October 10, 2024: Official Release
Ubuntu 24.10 is expected to ship with the Linux Kernel 6.11 or newer, the GNOME 47 desktop, and GCC 14.1 compiler. There may also be improvements to the Flutter installer, but it's unclear if the desktop security center will be included in this release.
For desktop users, the main advantage of Ubuntu 24.10, as a non-LTS release, is the availability of software updates, including the upcoming GNOME 47, which promises functional improvements. For those still on older versions of Ubuntu, now is a good time to upgrade to the latest LTS release, Ubuntu 24.04, before Ubuntu 24.10 arrives.
