Google Pre-releases Pixel 8a with G3 Chip and 120Hz Refresh Rate, Offering 7-Year Update Support
Google has become increasingly carefree about leaking information about its Pixel series devices, sometimes even releasing information ahead of schedule. This unconventional approach has been repeated with the Pixel 8a, which was suddenly announced today. The Pixel 8a is a mid-range device in the Pixel 8 series.
The starting price of the Pixel 8a is $499, which may not be extremely low, but it's still a Google flagship series device. Google promises to provide long-term security and update support for up to 7 years for the Pixel 8a.
Here are the key specs:
- Chip: Google Tensor G3
- Screen: 6.1-inch OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate
- Memory: 8GB LPDDR5x
- Camera: 64MP main camera + 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera + 13MP front camera
- Supports WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3
- Battery capacity: 4492mAh, with wireless charging capabilities
- Pre-installed with Android 14 system
The Pixel 8a comes in two storage options: 128GB and 256GB. The 128GB version starts at $499 and is available in four colors: Sage, Bay, Obsidian, and Ceramic. The 256GB version is priced at $599 and only available in Obsidian.
After the release of Android 15, the Pixel 8a will also receive timely updates, with 7-year security and update support including feature updates in the early years and security updates in the later years. This means that even five years later, Google will still provide security updates to fix vulnerabilities, even if the Android system cannot be upgraded.
One of the biggest advantages of Google's flagship series is the use of native Android systems and update support provided by Google, which is far better than third-party OEMs.
