The Unicode Consortium Begins Review of Unicode 16 Adding New Emojis Including Eye Bag Face, Fingerprint, Shovel, Splash, etc.
Starting today, the Unicode Consortium, responsible for creating Unicode characters and adding Emoji symbols, begins the review of the Unicode 16 Beta version. This testing period will end on July 2, 2024, after which the official version of Unicode 16 will be released, bringing new Emoji symbols.
The new Emojis include:
- 1FAE9: Face with Eye Bags, keywords include exhausted, sleepy, or tired
- 1FAC6: Fingerprint, keywords include fingerprint, identity, security (also includes forensic)
- 1FABE: Leafless Tree, representing barren, drought, and winter
- 1FADC: Root Vegetables, keywords include beet, garden, root, radish, and vegetables
- 1FA89: Harp
- 1FA8F: Shovel
- 1FADF: Splash, keywords include paint, leak, dirty
These new Emojis are based on proposals received by the Unicode Consortium and reviewed by the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee. The new Emojis have passed the review and are awaiting final testing.
Once Unicode 16 is released, operating system developers, including Apple, Google, and Microsoft, will adapt it in subsequent updates. This adaptation will take some time, and the new Emojis might not be available to users until the end of this year or even the spring of next year.
