Seagate Launches Official Store for Certified Refurbished Hard Drives: 22TB Refurbished Model Priced at Approximately $311.99
Hard drive manufacturer Seagate has recently launched an official refurbished store on the eBay platform. This store is dedicated to selling Seagate-certified refurbished mechanical hard drives, aiming to reduce electronic waste and expand sustainable development plans.
The source of these hard drives is Seagate's hard drive recycling program. Recycled drives are assessed by a dedicated team at Seagate to determine if they can be refurbished and resold.
Typically, damaged hard drives are discarded as waste, and most drives collected through recycling programs are directly shredded. However, the rare earth materials used in mechanical hard drives are not reusable, making shredding an unsustainable practice.
With official refurbishment and certification, the credibility of Seagate's second-hand hard drives is enhanced. Currently, there is a vast market for second-hand hard drives on major e-commerce platforms, but using them comes with risks, especially those provided by third-party stores.
Seagate-factory refurbished and certified mechanical hard drives have their power-on time reset to zero, appear almost brand new, and come with at least a 1-year limited warranty, with some refurbished drives offering a 2-year limited warranty.
Even so, a 1-year warranty for refurbished drives may seem short, as many hard drives can last much longer. The absence of a longer warranty poses a risk for users, not to mention data issues. If a drive fails just after a year, the cost would be wasted.
In terms of pricing, the officially refurbished Seagate mechanical hard drives are indeed cost-effective. For example, the new retail price for a Seagate helium-filled Exos X22 22TB drive is 610.99, while the official refurbished version is 311.99.
However, it's observed that only the high-capacity drives offer significant savings, with lower-capacity refurbished drives not receiving discounts as steep as 50%.
Here are some prices for refurbished models:
- Seagate Barracuda 10TB – $153.99
- Seagate Exos X16 14TB – $169.99
- Seagate Exos X16 12TB – $184.99
- Seagate Barracuda Pro 12TB – $184.99
- Seagate Exos X16 16TB – $209.99
- Seagate Exos X18 16TB – $209.99
- Seagate Exos X20 16TB – $209.99
- Seagate Exos X20 18TB – $229.99
- Seagate Exos X20 20TB – $268.99
- Seagate Exos X22 20TB – $268.99
- Seagate Exos X22 22TB – $311.99
Currently, Seagate's official refurbished hard drive store is only available to the U.S. market. Overseas buyers may still make purchases but might need to use a U.S. forwarding service, incurring additional shipping costs. Therefore, buyers should carefully calculate the total expenses and make data backups when using refurbished drives, as their stability and lifespan could not match those of brand-new ones.
