Google Launches AI Conversation Feature Gemini Live, Similar to ChatGPT's Advanced Real-Time Interaction
Today, Google announced an update to its artificial intelligence product, Gemini, by introducing a real-time conversation feature named Gemini Live, which is currently only available for smartphones. This feature allows users to engage in real-time conversations and obtain results immediately.
Gemini Live enables users to have real-time interactions with a chatbot. Users can also pause the chat to resume the conversation later, and of course, it supports terminating the conversation so users can focus on discussing specific issues.
Similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT advanced real-time voice mode, Google's Gemini Live is an exclusive feature for paid users. That is, users need to subscribe to the Gemini Advanced version at $20 per month to use it.
For now, this feature is only available on Android devices, as Gemini currently has a standalone app only for Android. Google has not released a Gemini for iOS version, and Gemini Live requires the installation of the app to use.
However, Google has made some improvements to optimize the experience. Since the Android system is also their own, Gemini Live can continue chatting in the background or even when the phone is locked. For example, chatting with a headset on feels just like making a regular phone call.
Google stated that iOS devices would support this feature in the future, but at this stage, it mainly supports Android devices. Initially, it only supports English, but Google plans to add more than 10 different languages later on.
In terms of competitors, although OpenAI's ChatGPT demonstrated its advanced real-time voice mode early on, it only started rolling out to ChatGPT Plus users at the end of July, and it will be available to all ChatGPT Plus users sometime in the fall. It must be said that OpenAI's pace is somewhat slow.
