Ubuntu 24.10 Beta, Code-Named "Oracular Oriole," Releases with Official Launch Slated for October 10 (Not an LTS Version)
Canonical, the developer behind the open-source operating system, has recently unveiled the beta version of Ubuntu 24.10, code-named "Oracular Oriole." The highlight of this release is the inclusion of GNOME 47 desktop environment.
As a non-Long Term Support (LTS) version, Ubuntu 24.10 will be supported until July 2025, with the official release scheduled for October 10, 2024. Desktop users will have the opportunity to upgrade and experience the new version upon its release.
The recent release of the GNOME 47 desktop environment brings with it accent colors, enhancements to various system functionalities, new open and save file dialogs, along with improvements to the Files app, Settings app, Web, and Calendar apps.
Additionally, minor improvements have been made to functionalities like the disk usage analyzer, busy cursor, vector tiles in the default maps, and app recommendations, making GNOME 47 a worthwhile upgrade for Linux users.
For NVIDIA graphics card users, Ubuntu 24.10 introduces a significant change: the system will default to Wayland instead of X.org if an NVIDIA GPU is detected. Canonical aims to resolve most of the known issues in Ubuntu 24.10/25.04/25.10 before releasing a new LTS version in April 2026.
While this is not an LTS version, the introduction of new features remains a key focus for desktop users, with the option to roll out to newer versions as they become available. For server usage, it's still recommended to stick with an LTS version.
For those who prefer to use an LTS version on their desktops, Ubuntu 24.04.x series offers a support cycle of 5 years, with the end of support stretching until 2029. Users can opt to install patches without major version upgrades until support concludes in 2029.
