Microsoft Releases Windows 11 Android Subsystem Update 2407, Potentially One of Its Last
Microsoft has recently updated its Windows 11 Android Subsystem (WSA), version 2407.40000.5.0. This update introduces no new features and likely focuses on fixing known security issues.
In March 2024, Microsoft announced its plan to discontinue support for the Android subsystem by March 2025, citing low usage rates and the absence of a viable commercial model as primary reasons. This decision marks Microsoft's move to officially phase out the Android subsystem.
The latest release comes without any release information or update logs. Given Microsoft's decision to abandon the feature, it is unlikely that new features were added. It is speculated that the update merely addresses some vulnerabilities.
By March 5, 2025, support for the Windows 11 Android Subsystem will be completely discontinued, and users will no longer be able to run the Android subsystem and its applications normally.
It remains uncertain whether there will be a way to preserve offline installation packages for continued use of Android applications on Windows 11, as some users still frequently utilize the Android subsystem.
On another note, Microsoft has partnered with Tencent in the Chinese mainland market. Tencent App Store, through third-party virtualization, supports running Android applications and games on the Windows operating system. Tencent plans to release applications from Tencent App Store to the Microsoft Store, allowing users to download and run Android applications on Windows 10/11 via Tencent App Store
Microsoft's decision to abandon the Android subsystem may largely stem from its niche appeal, with too few users and low frequency of use making it unsustainable. The partnership with Tencent, however, facilitates Tencent's expansion while leaving operational and revenue concerns to Tencent.
