VMware Workstation Pro 17.6.1 Release: Fixes for Critical Image Recognition Bug
Broadcom's proprietary yet free-for-personal-use virtualization software, VMware Workstation Pro, has recently rolled out its version 17.6.1. This release is primarily a bug-fix update, addressing a significant issue concerning the misrecognition of Windows 11 24H2 edition images.
Previously, users attempting to install the Windows 11 24H2 virtual machine encountered a snag: the system misidentified the image as a Windows Server 2025, triggering a simplified installation process that led to complications.
Additionally, for non-English versions, Broadcom has rectified two other bugs that could potentially disrupt the VMware software during installation or upgrading, recommending users to update to the latest version for an optimal experience.
Version 17.6.1 Update Log:
- Image Recognition Fix: Resolves an issue where new virtual machines created from ISO image files incorrectly identified the Windows 11 24H2 edition as Windows Server 2025.
- SVGA Error Correction: Fixes a critical error (SVGA exception 0xc0000005) that occurs when launching a virtual machine with 3D graphics activated.
- Installation/Update Bugs: Addresses errors encountered when installing or updating VMware on non-English host systems, which previously resulted in MSI pop-up errors.
- CentOS 9 Stream Compatibility: Notes that CentOS 9 Stream versions higher than kernel 5.14.0-4132 are no longer supported on VMware Workstation Pro 17.6 (not a bug, but a cessation of support).
Known Issues in Version 17.6.1:
- Multi-monitor functionalities might not work as expected in specific setups. Currently, there's no workaround, pending a thorough investigation and fix in future updates.
