Microsoft Updates Windows 11 Notepad App with AI Features for Editing Tone, Length, and Wording
In a move that may raise eyebrows, the famously straightforward Notepad app is now being enhanced by Microsoft with AI capabilities. This update allows users to employ AI for altering the text content directly within Notepad.
The newly released Notepad version 11.2410.15.0, currently available to Windows Insider program participants, introduces a rewriting function powered by Microsoft Copilot.
This rewriting feature offers three modes: expanding or condensing text, modifying tone, and altering format. Microsoft states that this facilitates easy adjustments to meet specific objectives, while keeping the original text visible in a dialogue box for approval before any replacement is made.
Users have the option to disable the rewrite feature within Notepad's settings, removing the rewrite option from the menu and automatically deactivating the Ctrl+I shortcut to prevent accidental activations that could disrupt the workflow.
Since the AI service incurs costs, utilizing the rewrite feature deducts from the user's points. Once depleted, the feature pauses until points are replenished, possibly through membership subscription.
Points are available to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers, as well as those with an active Copilot Pro subscription. Personal and Family plan members receive 60 points monthly, with Copilot Pro users enjoying unlimited access without point restrictions.
Market Availability:
The Notepad with rewrite capability is now previewing in the United States, France, the UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. Users in these regions simply need to log into their Microsoft account to access the feature.
Furthermore, Microsoft 365 Personal/Family and Copilot Pro users in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Taiwan can utilize their points to access the rewrite functionality.
