Projector Users Rejoice: Apple Adds Multiple Aspect Ratio Options in tvOS 18.2 Update
At the developer conference held in June 2024, Apple mentioned that Apple TV would support various aspect ratios. However, this feature was not included in the initial tvOS 18.0 release but awaited the tvOS 18.2 update.
Today, Apple has released the tvOS 18.2 beta to developers, introducing several new aspect ratio options to accommodate different screen sizes.
For most users utilizing standard home TVs, the aspect ratio is generally not an issue, as the mainstream TVs support 16:9. However, when connecting an Apple TV to a projector, the scenario changes.
Projectors, varying in brand and size, support multiple aspect ratios, making the playback on Apple TV less than optimal without these additional options.
The new aspect ratios added in this update include:
- Auto-adjust
- 16:9
- 21:9
- 2.37:1
- 2.40:1
- DCI 4K
- 32:9
After updating to the tvOS 18.2 beta, users can adjust the aspect ratio in the audio and video settings. There's generally no need to adjust if connected to a TV or mainstream monitor, as Apple TV will auto-adjust based on the device type.
For those using projectors or other devices, it's possible to test each aspect ratio to see which best suits the projector or device.
Currently, tvOS 18.2 is still in beta, with the official version expected to release in December. Therefore, general users will have to wait until December to update to the official tvOS 18.2 version and see these changes.
