Retro Game Emulator Delta Launches External Purchase Option: 3 via External Link vs.10 through Apple Store
The renowned retro game emulator, Delta, has rolled out a new version on the Apple App Store, a move previously unthinkable as it now explicitly allows purchases through external links for as low as $3/month. This shift comes in the wake of a court ruling against Apple in the EPIC lawsuit, deeming Apple's prevention of developers from directing users to external payment links as anti-competitive. Consequently, Apple is now compelled to permit developers to guide app users to make purchases via external links.
The latest version of the Delta emulator on the App Store introduces an external payment link. The developers have made a point to highlight the differences between in-app purchases (IAP) and external payments, cautioning users against using Apple's in-app purchase system.
Should users opt for payment through Apple's IAP, the cost is 10 per month. However, external payment options, such as through Patreon, offer more flexible pricing tiers at 3, 5 10 per month.
It's noteworthy that even for external link purchases, developers are still required to pay Apple a 27% commission on sales. This strategy is Apple's way of encouraging the continued use of its IAP system without violating the court's decision.
Delta's approach to pricing, which the developers term "anti-sales," is designed to deter users from making purchases through Apple's IAP.
Delta's developer, Testut, stated, "We really don't want people to use IAP for purchases. We've been using Patreon for years because it offers capabilities that Apple's IAP system can't, such as easier refund processing and customer support, which are more convenient for creators/developers."
