Offline Email Management Coming to the New Microsoft Outlook
The latest version of Microsoft Outlook, developed using WebView2, is in the process of being widely rolled out. This update is set to replace the pre-installed Mail and Calendar apps on Windows 10/11 (based on UWP), while the traditional Win32 version of Outlook will remain available for use.
Initially, the reception of the new Outlook was lukewarm, mainly due to numerous bugs and a less-than-ideal user experience. However, subsequent updates have significantly improved its functionality and user satisfaction.
In September 2023, Microsoft announced plans to introduce offline capabilities to the new version of Outlook. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen delays, this feature's implementation missed the scheduled timeline, requiring users to be online to access and manage their emails.
Microsoft has now updated the Microsoft 365 roadmap, reaffirming its commitment to adding offline functionality to the new Outlook. This feature is scheduled to be available by the end of June 2024, with updates being pushed directly through WebView to all users.
Once offline support is implemented, users will be able to perform various email operations while disconnected from the internet, including deleting, moving, forwarding, and composing emails. These actions will be saved locally and synchronized with the server once an internet connection is re-established.
The current version of the new Outlook already allows users to view emails, calendar events, and contacts offline. This data is cached locally when connected to the internet, ensuring that browsing is not affected.
Offline access is particularly crucial for business professionals who need to manage their emails while traveling or in situations where internet access is inconsistent. The ability to process emails offline and send them as soon as connectivity is restored is a highly anticipated feature, explaining the eagerness among many users for Microsoft to expedite the introduction of offline support.
