Microsoft to Launch 5TB and 10TB OneDrive Plans by Year's End to Accommodate User Demand for More Storage
When Microsoft first introduced OneDrive, free users could boost their storage to 15GB by inviting friends and adding it to the complimentary 5GB. However, those willing to subscribe to Microsoft 365 were initially offered unlimited OneDrive storage. This policy had to be revised when some users exploited the benefit, storing over 75TB of movies and DVR recordings on OneDrive, which is 15,000 times more than what an average user stored.
As a result, Microsoft rolled back the unlimited storage offer, limiting Microsoft 365 subscribers to 1TB, with an option to extend to 2TB. This capacity, however, still falls short for some users. Recognizing this, Microsoft plans to introduce new subscription tiers by the end of the year, allowing storage expansion to 5TB or even 10TB.
These expanded OneDrive storage plans will be part of the Microsoft 365 personal or family subscriptions, meaning they cannot be purchased separately from Microsoft 365, potentially making them a pricier option.
While the 1TB offered with Microsoft 365 subscriptions suffices for most individual and family users, those involved in video editing or software development might find the need for greater storage justified, even at a higher price.
