From Settings to Standalone: Apple’s Latest Move in Password Management
In an exciting development reported by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is set to introduce a standalone password manager at the upcoming WWDC 2024. This new application will be pre-installed on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS, and also extend support to Vision Pro and Windows systems.
Apple already incorporates a password management tool within iOS, nestled within the settings menu. However, it seems Apple has recognized the need for a more accessible and user-friendly solution, prompting the launch of a standalone version.
While Apple does not aim to monetize directly from this password manager—hence, Android and Linux support will remain absent—the move could nevertheless exert pressure on other password management services by attracting more users to Apple's ecosystem. Despite not competing directly with password managers available on Android or Linux, the new standalone version is expected to offer significant improvements.
The forthcoming password manager promises enhanced functionality, including the categorization of details into various classes such as accounts, WiFi networks, and keys. This organization aims to streamline user experience by simplifying management based on category.
The inclusion of Windows support is not entirely surprising. Apple had previously embraced cross-platform compatibility through the iCloud password extension for Windows browsers, aiding users who navigate between iOS/iPadOS and Windows in synchronizing their data across platforms.
However, an Android version remains off the table, reaffirming Apple's strategy to cater exclusively to its ecosystem while extending a hand to Windows users. Android enthusiasts will need to look towards third-party password managers for similar functionality.
