Github Codespaces/Action/Pages Also Experience Outages Due to Microsoft Cloud Regional Data Center Fault
The cloud computing platform of Microsoft, Microsoft Azure, experienced a fault starting from July 18, 2024, 21:56 UTC+0 . The fault primarily occurred in Azure's central United States regional data center, leading to access disruptions for services such as Microsoft 365, OneDrive, and Xbox.
Additionally, the code hosting platform is affected as well, with logs indicating performance degradation issues in Github Codespace, Github Action, and Github Pages. Github is currently addressing these issues.
Although Github has not disclosed that the issues were caused by the Microsoft Azure fault, the timing of the Github disruptions is similar to that of the Azure outage, suggesting that they were likely caused by the Azure fault as well.
As of the publication of this article, Github Pages has returned to normal operation. Github resolved the issue by shifting the affected region, but the remediation strategy may take some time to be applied to all users.
The performance degradation issue with Github Codespace has not been completely resolved, and Github requires more time to address it; Github Action is also presumably gradually recovering, though users launching large runners may still experience startup delays.
Below is the timeline of the incidents:
- July 18, 2024, 22:47 UTC+0 : Investigating performance degradation in Github Action.
- July 18, 2024, 23:22 UTC+0 : Some Action users are experiencing delays or failures during execution.
- July 18, 2024, 23:23 UTC+0 : Github Pages experiencing performance degradation.
- July 18, 2024, 23:57 UTC+0 : Github is transferring the affected region to mitigate the disruption.
- July 19, 2024, 00:24 UTC+0 : Pages have returned to normal.
- July 19, 2024, 01:50 UTC+0 : Measures taken to mitigate the issue, users may experience startup delays.
- July 19, 2024, 02:10 UTC+0 : Investigating performance degradation in Github Codespace.
