Apple Files Copyright Complaint Against Docker, Leading to the Removal of Docker-OSX Project
An open-source project on GitHub, known as Docker-OSX, has been enabling users to easily run Apple's OSX and macOS systems within containers, offering a more convenient alternative to using virtual machines like VMware Workstation.
Starting August 26, users began experiencing issues when attempting to deploy through Docker, as they could not pull images successfully. Attempts to pull images resulted in errors stating the repository did not exist or required login, affecting both older versions and images like macOS Sonoma.
Developer @sickcodes responded in an issue that Apple had filed a complaint against the Docker-OSX repository on Docker Hub, alleging copyright infringement. Consequently, Docker Hub has temporarily taken action against the repository.
For now, the developer has not received further details from Docker Hub. However, given Apple's initiation of the complaint and its ownership of copyright for OSX and macOS systems, Docker Hub had to act upon the complaint.
The reason behind Apple's complaint has sparked curiosity. With the prevalence of Hackintosh systems and the Docker-OSX project being several years old, such projects have not attracted a massive user base. Apple's decision to file a copyright complaint now, after seemingly turning a blind eye for years, is puzzling.
