GitHub Continuously Blocks AdGuard's Ad Blocker Rule Project for Unknown Reasons
Earlier, AdGuard, a well-known ad-blocking software, had its official ad-blocking rules repository blocked by GitHub. This blockage meant that all users installing AdGuard couldn't update the latest blocking rules through GitHub.
It's important to emphasize that such blocks seem to be triggered by some form of automated rules, rather than GitHub manually reviewing the repository for copyright or other issues.
Although the issue with the previously blocked repository was quickly resolved, AdGuard continues to face intermittent re-blockages.
According to a message released by AdGuard, GitHub had once again blocked repositories containing certain ad-blocking rules, including the List-KR rules aimed at the South Korean region.
The block dates back two weeks, including an account of a main contributor being marked as SPAM and suspended. AdGuard has submitted a request for restoration but has not received a response for two weeks.
The blocking of List-KR, a set of ad-filtering rules for the South Korean region, has yet to be lifted. This prevents contributors, users, and maintainers from adding new ad-blocking rules, and end-users from receiving the latest updates.
AdGuard, known as a reputable software developer in the industry, has encountered issues in getting timely processing after submitting tickets. Eventually, they resorted to posting on X/Twitter to increase visibility.
Many netizens have expressed their frustration with GitHub while suggesting that AdGuard should migrate to platforms like GitLab, which may offer a solution. GitLab is perceived to have a lower probability of such wrongful blockages and, if they occur, tends to handle them more swiftly.
However, considering that users, contributors, and maintainers might prefer the GitHub platform, migration is not a simple task. It remains unclear whether AdGuard has any plans to migrate.
