F5 Announces Migration of NGINX Source Code to GitHub to Facilitate Developer Contributions
The popular open-source project for reverse proxy servers, NGINX, has recently announced its decision to migrate its source code repository from Mercurial to GitHub. Effective immediately, developers can submit patches via Pull Requests to improve the software.
Owned by the American network technology company F5 Networks, NGINX has long utilized its bespoke repository. While open to contributions, the process for external developers to submit their work was somewhat cumbersome.
Moving to GitHub simplifies everything, as developers are already familiar with and use GitHub extensively. This platform makes submitting patches, reporting issues, and tracking problems much more convenient.
The migration introduces the following features:
- Developers can submit patches through Pull Requests.
- Users can report bugs, request new features, or suggest improvements in issues.
- Upcoming release changelogs will also be available on GitHub.
Given the long history of using a non-GitHub platform, the transition may require some adjustment time for many existing NGINX developers, contributors, and team members. To accommodate this, NGINX will continue to offer support via the community mailing list and accept patches until December 31, as part of the transition period.
