[Solution] Microsoft confirms that Windows 10/Server 2019 will not be able to install the latest cumulative update
This week, Microsoft rolled out its May 2024 routine cumulative update for all supported versions of Windows 10, aimed at addressing a host of known issues and enhancing security measures. IT administrators have been eagerly deploying this update to ensure systems are up-to-date and secure.
However, the update process hasn't been smooth for all, as installation errors have been reported by several users. Specifically, the error code 0x800f0982 pops up during the update attempt, a problem that persists even when attempting installation via offline packages.
Microsoft has since acknowledged this issue, clarifying that it predominantly affects Windows Server 2019, which is based on Windows 10 Version 1809. Users of Windows 10 22H2, whether home or enterprise, are reportedly not impacted by this glitch.
According to Microsoft's support documentation, the KB5037765 update released on May 14, 2024, may fail to install on Windows Server servers, displaying the error code 0x800f0982. This issue appears to be associated with devices that do not support non-U.S. English language packs.
The specific cause of the problem remains unclear, but it has been widely reported among Windows Server 2019 systems using non-U.S. English (EN-US) settings. A temporary workaround involves installing the U.S. English language pack.
Here's a non-official solution provided:
- Download the Windows 10 language pack ISO file by clicking here.
- Mount the ISO file to the Explorer, then copy the \x64\langpacks\Microsoft-Windows-Server-Language-Pack_x64_en-us.cab file to the desktop.
- Press Win+R to open Run and enter "lpksetup.exe" to launch the language pack installer.
- Select the U.S. English language pack installation file you copied earlier and proceed with the installation.
- After installation, there's no need to restart immediately. Download the KB5037765 update package for offline deployment. Once deployed successfully, restart your system.
