Apple Updates Xcode 16 Beta 4, Finally Bringing AI Code Prediction to 8GB RAM Devices
In the initial release of Xcode 16 Beta in early June, Apple explicitly stated that the AI code completion feature required at least 16GB of memory. This meant that Mac devices equipped with only 8GB of RAM were ineligible to use the AI code completion tool, sparking widespread mockery at the time. After all, Apple has often claimed that 8GB of RAM should be sufficient for most uses.
The code completion tool is a new feature prepared by Apple for developers. It utilizes AI to automatically predict and generate code, saving developers time and effort. This function requires computational power from the device, hence the memory requirement.
Despite the fact that most developers might not use Mac devices with only 8GB of RAM, Apple's own 16GB limitation was met with considerable criticism. Now, Apple has revised this restriction.
With the latest release of Xcode 16 Beta 4, Apple has removed the 16GB memory requirement. The new guideline states that all Mac devices powered by the Apple M series chips, including those with 8GB of RAM, are now supported.
However, to date, the AI code completion feature is still unavailable in China. It remains unclear whether Apple plans to make this AI functionality accessible to developers within China. If made available, it could significantly benefit domestic developers.
