Ubuntu Touch OTA-5 for Mobile Devices Released - Experience Native Ubuntu on Your Phone
Do you recall the Ubuntu Touch system for smartphones? Initially developed by Canonical, the creator of Ubuntu, in collaboration with the open-source community, Canonical discontinued its support in 2017. Subsequently, the open-source community-led by UBports took over the project.
Despite seven years having passed, UBports continues to support the development and functionality of Ubuntu Touch, with the latest release being the Ubuntu Touch OTA-5 update. This update addresses a variety of known issues.
Developed based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, the OTA-5 update introduces refined power management settings to differentiate between various interaction modes. Additionally, it resolves an issue where users were not properly notified about calendar synchronization failures due to authentication problems.
Given that the previous OTA-4 update was based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, transitioning to OTA-5 also necessitated addressing cross-version upgrade challenges. This update facilitates direct upgrades for users.
The supported devices for this system include:
- Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1
- F(x)tec Pro1 X
- Fairphone 3 and 3+
- Fairphone 4
- Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL
- JingPad A1
- OnePlus 5 and 5T
- OnePlus 6 and 6T
- Sony Xperia X
- Vollaphone
- Vollaphone X
- Vollaphone 22
- Vollaphone X23
- Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC / X3
Interested users can visit the official Ubuntu Touch website to learn how to install and upgrade the system, given they possess a compatible smartphone. It's evident from the supported device list that many newer models are not included, indicating current support is limited to existing devices.
