Apple is set to launch the AirPods 4 next month, introducing two versions at different price points.
According to the latest report by Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Apple plans to unveil the fourth generation of its AirPods wireless earbuds at the product launch event in September 2024. This release will feature two versions: one more affordable and the other more expensive (yet still below the price of the AirPods Pro series).
Apple typically updates the AirPods line every two years, and with the AirPods 3 having been released in 2021, a refresh is due after three years.
Gurman states that Apple intends to introduce two variants of the AirPods 4, with specific names yet to be disclosed. The more affordable version is set to replace the AirPods 2, while the pricier version will serve as a successor to the AirPods 3.
The higher-end version is expected to offer features such as active noise cancellation and wireless charging, absent in the entry-level model, allowing customers to choose based on their needs and budget.
Given the current pricing of about 90 for the AirPods 2 179 for the AirPods 3, the AirPods 4 versions are anticipated to be similarly priced.
A notable change is the adoption of a USB-C port, replacing Apple's proprietary Lightning connector, a move already made in the newer models of the AirPods Pro.
With the AirPods 3's features increasingly aligning with those of the AirPods Pro series, Apple may likely update the AirPods Pro next year to maintain interest, as the new AirPods 4 could overshadow the Pro version.
Following the launch of the AirPods 4, the AirPods 2 are expected to be discontinued, while the AirPods 3 might be offered at a discounted price for a period before ceasing production.
