Apple Is Redesigning the Magic Mouse to Fix Long-Standing Flaws, Possibly Moving the Charging Port
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has released the latest news that Apple is in the process of redesigning the Magic Mouse to address some long-standing flaws. The new Magic Mouse is expected to launch by mid-2026.
Since its introduction in 2009, Apple has made several modifications to the Magic Mouse, including switching from AA batteries to a rechargeable battery in 2015, offering new color options in 2021, and replacing the Lightning charging port with a USB-C interface in 2024.
Despite these changes, the overall design of the Magic Mouse has not significantly evolved over the years. In particular, the charging port's location at the bottom has often been criticized by users. While charging the mouse is not a frequent necessity, it can be inconvenient if the mouse needs to be charged urgently.
Gurman revealed that Apple is seeking to create more relevant products while also addressing the long-standing complaint of the charging port's bottom location. More importantly, the design changes aim to make it more ergonomic and comfortable to use.
It's still unclear what the new Magic Mouse will look like, but for Apple, relocating the charging port from the bottom doesn't seem to have many suitable alternatives, unless they revert to a design powered by two batteries.
Rechargeable battery-powered mice are not uncommon, such as Logitech's MX Master 3S, which features a charging port at the front. However, this design is feasible because the mouse itself is relatively bulky, thus providing space for a charging port.
Given the Magic Mouse's slim design, placing the charging port on the front seems impractical unless Apple opts for a significant redesign to adopt an ergonomic design similar to Logitech's, where fitting a charging port at the front might not be a major issue.
