Xiaomi Sets New Standard: Monthly Updates Starting 2025
Most Android devices struggle to receive updates post-launch, with occasional security patches to fix critical vulnerabilities being the rare exception. Generally, both security and feature updates are hard to come by.
Currently, only a few brands in the global Android market, such as Google and Samsung, manage to provide monthly updates. For instance, Samsung offers monthly security patches to address vulnerabilities, and sometimes these updates include new features.
Xiaomi is now poised to join the ranks of Google and Samsung. Alvin T, Xiaomi's Global Vice President, announced on his social media that starting from 2025, Xiaomi will be able to provide updates monthly. Alvin T stated he didn't want to overpromise, but his team would share more news once ready.
Details of Xiaomi's update plan are still unclear, but achieving the monthly update goal would mean timely synchronization with AOSP updates to fix security vulnerabilities at the least.
Ideally, incorporating new features in these monthly updates would enhance user experience by ensuring security and optimal performance.
Xiaomi typically offers updates every 90 days, with variability in the models that receive these updates. Older models tend to lose support over time. Therefore, Google encourages OEMs to offer at least seven years of security updates, extending the safe usage life of older devices as much as possible.
It's worth noting that Alvin T oversees Xiaomi's international business. However, to align with industry-leading update practices, it's reasonable to expect that both Chinese and international versions of Xiaomi devices would follow the same update strategy.
