Microsoft Edge Browser Confirmed to Migrate to MV3, But Timeline for Phasing Out MV2 Extensions Uncertain
Google's aggressive promotion of Manifest v3 (MV3) in Chrome browser has sparked widespread discontent among users and developers. Google believes that migrating to MV3 will improve security and reduce the risks associated with extensions. However, MV3's limitations on ad-blocking extensions have led many to criticize Google's move as an attack on ad-blocking tools.
Despite the backlash, Google has pushed forward with MV3 and will no longer support extensions developed with Manifest v2 (MV2). As a result, many outdated extensions will become unusable.

Microsoft Edge browser has also confirmed its plans to migrate to MV3, eventually phasing out support for MV2-based extensions. However, unlike Google, Microsoft is taking a more measured approach, continuing to collect feedback from developers.
Microsoft has not set a specific timeline for ending support for MV2 extensions, but emphasized that Microsoft Edge enterprise policies will continue to support MV2, with support duration at least matching that of Chrome browser's MV2.
Currently, the main desktop browser extension stores are Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Add-ons, and Firefox's extension store, all of which are based on Chromium.
If Microsoft decides to follow Google's lead and adopt MV3, other Chromium-based browsers will likely follow suit, unless users manually download and install older extensions.
