Microsoft Abandons Built-In Crypto Wallet in Edge: A Move Nobody Saw Coming
In March 2023, Microsoft announced plans to introduce a digital wallet feature in its Microsoft Edge browser. This feature was designed to support a range of wallets including Ethereum, DAI, NFTs, and other wallets on Web3, etc.
Essentially, this was Microsoft's attempt to venture into the Web3 space. However, the idea of using a built-in digital wallet in the Microsoft Edge browser raised concerns among many users, especially since Microsoft isn't known for developing cryptocurrency wallets.
These concerns likely led to a lack of adoption among the majority of users, prompting Microsoft to announce the discontinuation of the digital wallet/cryptocurrency wallet feature, with plans to remove it in future updates.
In the newly released official version of Microsoft Edge v129.0, Microsoft stated:
"The CryptoWallet feature and the CryptoWalletEnabled policy have been deprecated to enhance the end-user experience. This policy will also become obsolete in future actively released versions."
Microsoft did not specify the reasons behind the discontinuation of the digital wallet feature, but it's highly probable that it was due to low user engagement. Given that the cryptocurrency wallet feature had not been updated with any new, attractive innovations over the past year, continuing its development and integration seemed unnecessary.
However, if you happen to be a user of the Microsoft Edge crypto wallet, it is advisable to transfer all your cryptocurrency assets, including NFTs and other tokens, to another wallet as soon as possible to avoid potential access issues in the future.
