Statistical Data Shows Microsoft Edge Market Share Falls Below 13% While Chrome's Share Increases
Thanks to the bundling with Windows 10/11 and various pop-up recommendations, Microsoft Edge browser indeed witnessed a rapid increase in market share over the past two years, reaching as high as 13.56%.
However, the latest statistical data from Statcounter indicates that Microsoft Edge's market share is now declining. As for the reason, it is unclear whether Microsoft has reduced its pop-ups (which, based on Landian.news experience, seems not to have decreased) or if more users, fed up with the pop-ups, have continued to switch back to using the Chrome browser.
As of November 30, 2024, desktop browser market share statistics are:
- Google Chrome's market share increased by 1.09% from 55.41% on October 31 to 66.31%
- Microsoft Edge's market share decreased by 0.69% from 13.56% on October 31 to 12.87%
- Apple Safari's market share increased by 0.07% from 9.06% on October 31 to 9.13%
- Mozilla Firefox's market share increased by 0.06% from 6.39% on October 31 to 6.45%
- Opera browser's market share decreased by 0.3% from 3.2% on October 31 to 2.81%
The increase in Google Chrome's market share is quite surprising, with 66.31% being Chrome's highest market share in the first 11 months of 2024. The market share of other browsers on the desktop platform is indeed far behind Chrome.
The decline in Microsoft Edge's market share is also quite significant. Although Statcounter's data may not be 100% accurate, the comparative data also comes from the same platform, making it a point of reference.
On the other hand, the continued increase in Chrome's market share might not be entirely positive for Google, especially since the U.S. Department of Justice is pressing Google to sell Chrome. Such a sale would be a severe blow to Google, as a significant portion of Google Search's market share is supported by Chrome.
Another interesting situation is in Europe, where Chrome, Vivaldi, Opera, Waterfox, and others have formed a Browser Choice Alliance to counteract Microsoft Edge, specifically to combat Microsoft's various methods of preventing users from switching their system's default browser to others.
