Goodbye Microsoft Cortana! Windows 11 24H2 version completely deletes pre-installed Cortana/WordPad/Prompt apps
Microsoft has announced a significant update with the release of Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100.712 (Preview Release Channel), marking the end of several applications, including Microsoft Cortana, WordPad, and the Tips app. This move comes after the decision made in 2023 to discontinue a number of apps and features that were no longer supported or updated.
Microsoft Cortana Says Goodbye
Microsoft Cortana, once a key feature in Windows' attempt to integrate voice-assisted functionalities, is now officially removed. Despite its initial ambition to rival other voice assistants, Cortana’s presence dwindled over time, with its functionalities being limited to the U.S. market for minimal testing before this final phase-out. Users no longer need to manually uninstall Cortana—it simply won't be part of the new Windows installation.
WordPad: An End of an Era
WordPad, positioned between the simplicity of Notepad and the complexity of Microsoft Word, has served users for nearly three decades. Previously demoted to an optional feature—meaning it wasn't installed by default but could be added manually—WordPad will now be entirely removed from the list of optional features in Windows 11 24H2. This update effectively ends the availability of WordPad for users who upgrade to the latest version.
The Tips App is Discontinued
The Tips app, known for providing useful suggestions and showcasing new features with each update of Windows 10 and 11, will also see its end. With no replacement in sight, it seems Microsoft is moving away from developing this type of application, shifting focus towards other areas of the Windows experience.
